How Does Canadian Citizenship Work?

Canadian citizenship is the final step in the immigration journey where you officially become a citizen of Canada. Becoming a Canadian citizen allows you to:

Travel freely (visa exempt) to over 189 countries and territories.

Vote in Federal, Provincial, and Municipal elections.

Retain existing citizenship through dual citizenship.

Possess a Canadian Passport!

Eligibility

Requirements

  • Physically lived in Canada for at least 3 years (1095 days) in the last 5 years
  • Filed Canadian Income Taxes for 3 of the past 5 years
  • Demonstrate proficiency in either English or French. Not required if over the age of 55 or for those 18-54 with proof demonstrating they meet the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) Level 4 or higher in English or French. 
  • Have no criminal record or past immigration problems

Step 4 > Production

Our team goes to work building your application. We are in contact with you throughout this entire process. 

Step 5 > Review

Your complete application will come to you for review and signatures. After your review, we perform a rigorous internal review to ensure perfection! 

Step 6 > Submission

Your application is submitted to IRCC. We immediately send you a confirmation of submission, summary of current government processing times, and we set up an IRCC portal tracker so you can watch your application throughout processing.

Step 7 > Government Processing

Additional requests for biometrics, medicals, and more may be requested from IRCC as your application makes its way through their processing. We communicate this with you immediately and provide detailed instructions. 

Step 8 > Decision

You are immediately contacted when IRCC updates your case. We are there to walk you through the next steps and always look forward to celebrating with you!
